Abstract

The effects of the information explosion on the manager and on his performance are discussed. For instance, the technical content of information means that the manager often has to communicate with experts in various fields and finds it difficult to judge the validity of their conclusions and advice. This problem is typical of those that can be tackled by following the systematic approach described in this article. Seven basic concepts associated with problem analysis and decision making are discussed.

The only way to manage the information explosion is to give managers the practical tools. These techniques exist and are generally applicable. The approach can be learnt by doing and not by being supplied with a prescription.
