Abstract

Little doubt exists that South Africa is experiencing social and economic problems of threatening attitude. Business must get involved in the solutions of these problems, not only because its own survival is at stake, but also because business has special advantages above other institutions of society to tackle the problems. By making a visible contribution to the solution of social problems, an opportunity is utilized to gain a position of leadership within society. This, however, will require co-operation and co-ordination amongst individual firms and between business and government. Managers will have to develop a long term approach toward profit maximization. Encouraging evidence exists that business is prepared to make a contribution to the solution of society's pressing problems.
